NADA proposes the architecture of leisure as critical infrastructure within the contemporary city. The studio departs from a dual meaning: to swim, as a bodily experience that alters perception and one’s relationship to gravity; and to do nothing, as a deliberate interruption of the regime of hyperproductivity that shapes contemporary urban life. From this intersection, the studio explores how a mixed-use building, centered on water and embedded in an urban context, can activate new ways of understanding bathing rituals, programs for intergenerational leisure, care, sport, and public space.

The research may be approached through multiple dimensions: the technical (water as a system), the structural (containment and large spans), the historical (the gradual disappearance of leisure as a public project and program), the spatial (the experience of the zero level), and the cultural (bathing as a collective program and its relationship to the body, routine, and the private sphere). Each student will work on an urban fragment of their choice, introducing a body of water and developing—or transforming an existing building—with a mixed-use program that articulates leisure, the body, and the city. The underlying question is not only where to locate a building or a constructed landscape organized around water, but what kind of public life can be sustained around it.
