Futuros tras el Colapso

In a world that is aware of the ecological crisis yet unwilling to relinquish growth, the energy transition appears as the last opportunity for a new win-win scenario. It is assumed that it will allow us to maintain our standards of development while causing less harm to the planet.

This transition requires clean energy and green technologies. Yet, in order to produce them at the scale required, vast areas of territory must still be sacrificed. Like previous forms of exploitation, this new “green extractivism” will also leave behind deteriorated architectures, abandoned cities, and barren landscapes.

Assuming the hypothesis of such a collapse, this studio asks what futures can be designed for these scenarios. Which architectures will survive after that collapse? What kinds of landscapes might these territories offer? How can life be made viable in such spaces? Is it possible to rehabilitate these soils after decades of sacrifice? Ultimately, what role does architecture—in its various forms—play in defining those futures?

En un mundo que está consciente de la crisis ecológica pero que se niega a renunciar al crecimiento, la transición energética aparece como la última oportunidad de un nuevo win-win. Se supone que ella nos permitirá seguir manteniendo nuestros estándares de desarrollo sin causar tanto daño al planeta.
Esa transición requiere energías limpias y tecnologías verdes. Pero para producirlas a la escala que se necesita, igualmente se deben sacrificar grandes extensiones de territorio. Al igual que las formas previas de explotación, este nuevo “extractivismo verde” también terminará por legar arquitecturas deterioradas, ciudades abandonadas, y paisajes yermos.
Asumiendo la hipótesis de ese colapso, este taller se pregunta qué futuros podemos diseñar para esos escenarios. ¿Qué arquitecturas sobrevivirán después de ese colapso? ¿Qué paisajes podrán ofrecer esos territorios? ¿Cómo se hace viable la vida en esos espacios? ¿Es posible rehabilitar esos suelos tras décadas de sacrificio? En suma, ¿qué rol juega la arquitectura – en sus distintas formas – en la definición de esos futuros?
